Honouring Roy McMurtry’s Legacy on the 25th Year of Second Chance Scholarship Foundation

In the tapestry of Canadian history, certain figures stand out not only for their remarkable achievements Roy-McMurtry-in-a-court-of-lawbut also for the indelible mark they leave on society, and in the realm of justice and compassion, certain individuals shine brighter than the rest—a guiding light that illuminates the path for those in need. The Honourable Roy McMurtry, a titan of the legal profession and a champion of human rights, embodied such brilliance throughout his illustrious career. As we gather to commemorate the 25th year milestone of the Second Chance Scholarship Foundation, we pause to express our deepest gratitude to Mr. McMurtry for his unwavering dedication to our shared mission.

Roy McMurtry, born on May 31, 1932, transitioned from this world on March 18, 2024, leaving behind a profound legacy of advocacy for human rights, legal reform, and social justice. His tenure as Chief Justice of Ontario from 1996 to 2007 and his service as Canadian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom from 1985 to 1988 are testament to his commitment to public service and the betterment of society.

Throughout his illustrious career, McMurtry played a pivotal role in shaping the Canadian legal landscape. He was a central figure in negotiating the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and in patriating Canada’s Roy-McMurtry-with-his-threat-letter-from-KKKconstitution, leaving a permanent mark on the country’s legal framework. His contributions earned him numerous accolades, including the Osgoode Hall Law School’s Award of Excellence, the Ramon John Hnatyshyn Award for Law, and the Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity Conference Ally Award, among others.

McMurtry’s vision and our foundation’s mission are intrinsically linked. Both are rooted in the belief that every individual deserves an opportunity to rebuild their lives and contribute positively to society. It’s this shared commitment to empowering marginalized youth that underscores the enduring partnership between McMurtry’s legacy and the Second Chance Scholarship Foundation.

One of the most enduring testimonies to Roy McMurtry’s dedication to justice is the Roy and Ria McMurtry Endowment Fund. The Second Chance Scholarship Foundation created the Roy and Ria McMurtry Endowment Fund to honour the Honourable Roy McMurtry, and his wife Ria, upon the former Chief Justice’s receipt of the Foundation’s Guthrie Award. Coordinated externally to the Foundation, scholarships are awarded to an organization chosen by the former Chief Justice. Currently, that organization is ours – the Second Chance Scholarship Foundation, which provides scholarships to youth who are, have been, or are at risk of becoming in conflict with the law and who are enrolled in a college or university program relating to legal education. This fund serves as a beacon of hope for students who have faced or are at risk of facing conflicts with the law, embodying McMurtry’s belief in second chances and the transformative power of education.

The Second Chance Scholarship Foundation owes much of its success to Mr. McMurtry’s guidance. His wisdom and foresight have been instrumental in shaping the foundation’s initiatives and programs, ensuring that they remain true to the values of equity, inclusion, and opportunity. For this, we are eternally grateful.

The Second Chance Scholarship Foundation was established in 1999, 25 years ago, and was officially incorporated on February 7, 2003 and subsequently received charitable organization status on June 3, 2003. It has been a ray of hope for countless young individuals seeking to overcome adversity and pursue their dreams. As we reflect on the journey of our foundation, we are humbled by the countless lives that have been touched and transformed through our programs. From providing scholarships to aspiring lawyers and law enforcement officers, to supporting individuals in their pursuit of higher education, the foundation’s impact is far-reaching and profound. Over the years, the foundation has provided scholarships to numerous deserving youth, each with their own inspiring story of resilience and determination.

Among the success stories are those of recipients who have defied the odds and pursued higher education despite facing immense challenges. From completing law school and being called to the Bar, to graduating from prestigious universities and embarking on careers in law enforcement and entrepreneurship, these individuals exemplify the transformative impact of education and opportunity.

One recipient, who began his college journey while in custody, has since obtained a Bachelor of Science degree and been accepted to Teacher’s College, demonstrating the power of perseverance and determination. Another recipient, who took college courses while incarcerated as a youth, not only pursued higher education but also excelled in sports, showcasing the potential for redemption and growth.

These stories are a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of education. They remind us that with the right support and opportunities, young people can overcome adversity and achieve their full potential. As we reflect on the journey of the Second Chance Scholarship Foundation and honour the legacy of the Honourable Roy McMurtry, let us reaffirm our commitment to empowering marginalized youth and building a more inclusive and just society.
