How second chance changes the lives of young offenders!
“In 1968, Bob Beamon made the long jump world record in Olympics of 29 feet 1/2 inches. Her mother died when he was an infant, his stepfather took responsibility for him but he beat his mother and wife, and ended up imprisoned. At the age of 14, Bob Beamon ran away from home and started doing ill-equipped activities like stealing things and fighting. He got charged in court. Her grandmother requested the judge to give Bob Beamon a second chance and took responsibility for him. He was sent to 600 schools full of delinquents but he got mentally revived and became successful.”
Reasons of why juveniles commit a crime
There are many reasons for facing violence, abuse, and neglect in childhood. These types of activities have adverse effects on the teens. Lack of money and resources also pushes minors to do ill-equipped activities to gain status and everything they want. Adolescents with untreated mental well-being disarranges, such as sadness and depression, may show forceful behavior that can show as criminal conduct. Another factor is getting into the wrong society. In many cases, juvenile gets to the wrong people and gets misled by them.
Why second chance to young delinquents is important?
The first and foremost reason is that they are still juvenile and they are not mentally developed. Their brain is not like the brain of the adults. As per the study of “The University Of Rochester Medical College”, the teen’s brain works differently than the adult’s. The teen’s brain is not developed properly for decision-making and risk assessment. The immaturity is a significant factor in the involvement of a minor in the ill-equipped activated.
The power of rehabilitation
If a person commits a crime at a minor age, after considering all the circumstances, they should be given a 2nd chance.
“Bob Beamon was sent to 600 Schools by the judge, full of delinquents, and in day time they were locked up after school. He rehabilitated himself and became successful.”
There are various ways to help minors to get out of delinquency mentally:
- Education- By promoting education, fostering social and enthusiastic abilities, and giving access to strong assets such as counseling and mentorship. It offers structure, openings for success, and positive choices to reprobate behavior.
- Recreational Activities-Young offenders should be encouraged to take more interest in the recreational activities after school. According to a report, crimes by minors are committed between 3 P.m. to 6 P.m. So, recreational activities will help youth to get connected with society and make them busier.
- Functional Family Therapy (FFT)-This therapy helps in adolescent rehabilitation. In this therapy expert talks to the family or the guardians to help them to rehabilitate mentally their delinquent child.
The Impact of Second Chance-
According to the statistical data of Canada, the recidivism rate is declining. Many young offenders learn the lesson after committing a crime. After getting a 2 chance they get a second life.
“Being real scared and looking down at the ground the whole time the judge was talking”
Bob Beamon
After getting into trouble Bob Beamon learned a lesson and changed himself. These types of experiences are remembered by the minors for their whole life and they think twice before committing a crime. This type of lesson to offenders helps in making the community safer. Moreover, juveniles are the future of the country. Promoting and influencing juveniles to work hard will help to increase productivity in the future.
Breaking the cycle of Poverty-
Many young offenders come from a poverty background and have a background of trauma and systemic imbalances. By giving a second chance, we can change the cycle of generational poverty and provide a pathway to economic stability and social versatility. When young offenders get the opportunity to get education, employment, and futuristic growth, they can break free from the cycle of crime and poverty that may have trapped their families for generations.
