In the challenging surfaces of the criminal justice system, there is a stereotypical misconception regarding the capabilities of at-risk youths. All too frequently, these young adults are brushed off, their futures pre-judged as a failure and that they do not stand a second chance in society. 

Quite harsh right? Everyone deserves a second chance in life. Hence, with the access to opportunity, guidance, and, most important of all, education, these young adults will not only rebuild their lives, but also create a glimmer of hope for those in need.

Who Are At-risk Youths? 

When a youth (ages 12-17) lean towards risky behaviors, attitudes, and perceptions by indulging in criminal activity or are at a risk of. These behaviors are hints of youth who are experiencing difficulties at school, whether intellectually, socially, psychologically, and/or emotionally. 

In Canada, about 11.4% of the population lived in after-tax low-income situations. Poverty is one of the most prominent factors contributing to the number of at-risk adolescents. Their financial situation makes it appear difficult for them to focus on education while maintaining external relationships and responsibilities. 

Regular absences, lack of parental support, and limited language knowledge can all contribute to youth losing access to higher education, reducing their prospects of an occupation in adulthood. By granting scholarships, guidance, and assistance, we can support these youth to break free from the confines of their past and reach their full potential.

Common Myths on At-risk Youths

The environment we grow up shapes us – externally and genetically. Same to be thought when we look at at-risk youths. But these myths and stereotypes run across our mind, so let’s make an effort to look at it differently. 

1. They have no future goals.

A lot of us are never sure about what we want to do. We draw a plan and do our best to follow it and welcome changes as they greet themselves. However, a lot of us also grow up in stable homes with a support system. We are given opportunities. So unless we don’t extend opportunities to at-risk youths, we will never get a chance to see their potential. 

1. They don’t try hard enough.

Change is hard. Choosing a different part is hard. Pulling yourself out of a toxic environment and making a decision to be better is hard. They try and sometimes they work twice as hard. 

1. They end up causing troublemakers.

We all have an inner troublemaker. But remember, those from a rough environment who want to be better will curb their antics. Given the chance they will learn to make the right decisions. 

1. They are their parents.

As we grow up, the adults around us shape our thoughts and perspectives. Keeping that in mind, genetic disposition is also a point of concern. But youth who choose to take active decisions that will impact their life positively are consciously also taking the decision to not follow their parents’ path. Once they have the right adults guiding them, they will see what more life has in store for them and will follow the guidance of adults who wish them best.

How to Empower At-risk Youths

Financial hardship is one of the most significant obstacles that at-risk children confront while seeking higher education. However, there are several scholarship options and charitable organizations that help these young people.

Giving them a chance to study and build their life will forever remind them of the efforts they put into being a better person. It will remind them of their journey, what they are fighting for and what they are working towards.
